Athletics, a cornerstone of the Olympic Games, comprises a diverse range of track and field events. From sprints like the 100m dash to longer distances such as the marathon, athletes exhibit remarkable speed, agility, and endurance. Field events like long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, and javelin showcase explosive power and precision. The multifaceted nature of athletics fosters competition across varied disciplines, testing athletes’ strength, skill, and technique. Athletes train rigorously to achieve peak performance, striving for excellence in their chosen events. The essence of athletics lies in its embodiment of human capability and the relentless pursuit of pushing physical limits.

400m Track

The Outdoor 400m Track proudly stands as the only Class 1 synthetic athletic track in Sri Lanka, symbolizing the pinnacle of athletic infrastructure in the nation. This versatile facility welcomes athletes of all disciplines, accommodating a comprehensive range of track and field events. The track’s consistent surface offers athletes a uniform platform to pursue their highest achievements. Our dedicated discuss cage adheres to stringent international safety standards, ensuring the well-being of both athletes and fans. Every piece of equipment on this track is of world-class quality, facilitating a wide array of track and field events, including running, steeplechase, discus, shot put, high jump, pole vault, triple jump, and long jump, among others. Additionally,  We provide infrastructure facilities for daily training to enhance the performance of the top eight national athletes who represent our country at the senior, junior, and school levels of athletics, all at no cost.

200m Track

The 200m track is purpose-built to cater to athletes, offering them a convenient warm-up venue before their events. This versatile facility encompasses both the track itself and in-side ground, accommodating a range of activities including running, long jump, triple jump, and shot put. To enhance the experience for participants and organizers, there is a small pavilion available on-site. We extend the use of this facility to a variety of occasions, including sports events, practice sessions, festivals, children’s activities, and various other sports and recreational pursuits. For the comfort of all users, we maintain two well-appointed washrooms and two office rooms for organizers’ administrative needs. Additionally, a green shelter area on one side of the facility provides shade and relaxation.

COMPANY

The facility was a brainchild of V.A. Sugathadasa, the former Mayor of Colombo Municipal Council and the first Minister of Sports in Sri Lanka and construction of the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium commenced on January 16, 1957 and completed on December 16, 1962. Subsequent to various other development initiatives, the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex was entrusted to the Ministry of Sports as a trust fund with effect from 1st of February 1995 and the Act No. 17 of 1999 was submitted to the Parliament of Sri Lanka on 20th April 1999 for incorporating it as the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex.
